All current and aspiring Chief Medical Information Officers can celebrate. The American Board of Medical Specialties recently approved Clinical Informatics to be a Board-Certified Specialty.
How does this help you? Well, it increases your credibility and strength of resume when applying for jobs. When other docs are applying, you’ll have a leg up. In addition, I believe we’ll be seeing a higher pay grade for physicians with this board-certification.
For the next five years, any physician with a primary board specialty will be able to sit for the Clinical Informatics Board Exam. If you wait until after the five years, you will be required to do a fellowship first and then sit for the exam.
The specialty is being sponsored by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and co-sponsored by the American Board of Pathology. The first batch of testers will be in Fall 2012 with awards in January 2013. The AMIA is preparing board prep courses for this spring.
To stay on top of developments in Clinical Informatics as a subspecialty, you can follow AMIA or ABPM.
Thanks for the update,I have been following clinical informatics for a while.its a hot field and emerging recently many good Universities have started MS program and the admission is open for MD s aswell as RN and others too..so I have a quick question for you…what if a ECFMG certified Physician Does MS in Health Care Informatics, or Clinical informatics….Thanks for your effort..
