Medical Research Specialist

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine – Washington, DC 20016

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit organization working toward compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion. For the last 27 years, PCRM has led the way for reforms of federal nutrition policies, and our clinical research programs are breaking new ground in diabetes, cancer, and other serious medical conditions. We have fought for an emphasis on prevention, higher ethical standards in research, and scientific advances in basic research and effective drug development. Over the years, we have taken on battles to end ethically questionable experiments involving children and inhumane animal experiments and have worked to improve science education. We have worked with physicians, federal regulators, politicians, researchers, educators, students, and concerned citizens. And we have so much more work to do.

PCRM is seeking to hire a Medical Research Specialist to play an integral role with our work advocating for nonanimal research methods. This means evaluating specific uses of animals in research, understanding methods of research that do not involve animals, and working with decision-makers and the press to promote ethical research.

Today I am really excited to present to you the first interview series at MD Salaries. My goal is to get in touch with physicians practicing medicine or working in non- clinical jobs and ask them questions that you would want to know about their careers. For the first interview in the series, I reached out to Dr. Samuel Dyer, CEO of The MSL Society, and he was happy to give you a glimpse into his life.

Dr. Dyer has over 12 years of experience in Medical Affairs ranging from a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) to MSL Management as well as launching a business and serving on executive boards for biotechnology companies. He has worked on numerous clinical trials and overseen the launch of both pharmaceuticals and medical devices. He is currently CEO and founder of the MSL Society which is the first not- for-profit organization dedicated to the MSL role which is directed by an executive board and advisory committee. It is an important resource, which is fully dedicated to all aspects and levels of the Medical Science Liaison career.

Dr. Dyer, thank you for taking the time to participate in an interview with us. Can you explain in your own words just what a Medical Science Liaison is?

An MSL is usually a medical professional who has in-depth knowledge of a Disease State, Therapeutic Area, or Drug. In general, they are a field extension of a pharmaceutical company and serve as a medical resource for the Key Opinion Leaders they are interacting with. They act as a Liaison between the pharmaceutical company they work for and the KOL’s they are engaging with.

What salaries can one expect starting vs experienced?

Generally the base salary will range from 100K to 120K to start. Maybe higher based on the specific therapeutic area or disease state experience an applicant brings to the role, plus a bonus of 15-30% depending on the company with full benefits.

Are there opportunities for growth in the field? If so, what would that be?

Yes, definitely. A starting MSL can grow into a Sr. MSL and then advance into MSL management. You can also crossover into other roles within the Medical Affairs division such as Medical Information.

Is the field stable against the recession?

Yes, the MSL role has exploded over the last several years. Since 2005 there has been a 76% growth in the role at top 10 pharma companies while, at the same time, there have been dramatic cuts in other roles such as pharma sales reps.

Can primary care doctors be MSLs?

Of course. Generally, the educational standard for an MSL role is a doctorate degree within the sciences, which would include an M.D., D.O., PharmD. or Ph.D.

How did you break into the MSL field?

It can be very difficult to break in and it will take a lot of commitment and persistence. The easiest way for someone to break into the MSL role is to apply for only those roles that they are truly a match for based on their Therapeutic Area or disease state expertise. For example if a candidate has multiple years of experience within Oncology, they should not waste time applying for roles within CNS for example. I actually started as an MSL by applying for roles in the same Therapeutic Area in which I did my Medical training and Ph.D. It was easier to position myself as having a level of expertise when interviewing.

Dr. Dyer, I understand that you didn’t do a medical residency. Can you clarify what you meant by stating you have Medical Training in a Therapeutic Area?

During Medical School we were required to have additional training on special topics that we expected or wanted to focus on for our residency. I did a number of special projects focused on Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. After Medical School, I also did my Ph.D. in those same topics. This effectively placed me in a position to enter my first MSL role with Merck in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.

What are you currently doing now?

I worked with a team of colleagues for over two years and we just launched the first ever Non-Profit MSL Society. I am the Chairman of the Board of the MSL Society. We recently held our first live webinar and are currently working on the first live MSL Society conference. The MSL Society is the resource for those looking to break into the MSL role or to learn more about the MSL career. The purpose of the MSL Society is to advance the global MSL career.

And that concludes our interview with Dr. Dyer. Stay tuned for more interviews from successful physicians! If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments section.
Overview

What is a medical writer? Think about all those drug information inserts, those handouts on heart disease or diabetes you see at the doctor’s office, or even those lovely medical journals we read like the New England Journal of Medicine. Don’t forget research grants, consolidating statistics, clinical protocols for research, and more. Many of those words were written by experienced medical writers.

The field comprises of people trained at an associates level, bachelors, masters, and advanced degrees. So with that said, the income is pretty varied. But for those with the MD behind them, it’s a decent income.

Salary

It was difficult to find some salaries for you to get an idea. The main reason for this is because of the varied educational levels possible to become a medical writer. I did find one survey that can shed some light. The American Medical Writers Association released a survey in 2007. At that time, writers with advanced degrees were making a mean of $91,797 to $101,872. The range of salaries varied from $68,000 to $158,000.

You’ll have to consider that some of these may be just starting out in the field vs experienced professionals. And some of the differences in salary are gender based.

Now, in 2011, the AMWA released a new survey which stated that there was a 12.9% increase in salaries from it’s 2007 survey. That brings the new mean to about $115,000. That’s pretty good! The most experienced medical writers are making roughly the same as primary care physicians!

Training

Many employers are looking for medical writers with an MD or DO degree. Beyond that, they are hoping you have good communication skills with previous writing experience in your resume. If you have marketing experience, that’s a plus too. Having research experience or academic experience can further boost your hiring potential.

Don’t have any writing experience? You could join the American Medical Writers Association. They offer conferences with workshops to gain the skills you need to be competitive. There are also CME’s on the internet and even certificates in medical writing.

Here are some of the “fields” you can get training in:

Grants

Regulatory

Consumer Health

Abstracts and Posters

Scientific or Medical Journals

Biostatistics and Epidemiology

Continuing Medical Education

Conclusion

Medical writers take an enormous amount of data and put it into words for the rest of us to read and make sense of. Physicians can break into this field because of the vast medical knowledge they already have. As long as you can communicate it by writing technically, you may be able to make a good living as a medical writer.

Blogging is all the rage these days. Everyone has a blog about every topic imaginable. It’s a tough field as the internet is over saturated with writers. But as physicians, we have an advantage…our credentials. We are instantly experts of our field and that’s what many readers are looking for, someone who knows what they’re talking about.

Just what do you write about? And how much will you make?

The possibilities vary. It depends on how well you write, how well you promote your site, how popular your blog gets, and what revenue streams you enable.

How Well You Write

When trying to blog for money, you have to keep in mind that you are writing for your readers. What are they interested in? What do they want to read about? Did what you write make sense for the reader or just for you?

In the medical field, we have so many things we could write about. I chose physician salaries. There’s also Health IT, entrepreneurship, health policy, medical news, medical gadgets, medical apps, opening your own practice, etc! If you’re a medical student, even you have a unique audience. Those who ever wanted to become a doctor will listen to you, your experiences as you progress through medical school, and rejoice with every success hoping that they too will achieve the same.

Writing is an art that requires patients, research, and editing. Read many blogs in and out of your niche area. Find a style that works for you and then learn from it.

How Well You Promote Your Site

If you can get your site up and running on several social media outlets, you could increase the amount of visitors to your site. More visitors means more leverage for higher priced revenue streams or click conversions on ads. Some ways you can use social media include :

creating a facebook page

linking your posts to twitter

utilizing google plus

listing your blog on several blog lists

including your blog on all of your online personas

How Popular Your Blog Gets and Revenue Streams

This is important. More visitors leads to more money. How? A couple ways. If your main revenue is through ads, then the more visitors that come, the more that may click on those ads. Each click leads to change in your pocket. The other way is by selling ad space. If your blog traffic is high, you can charge more for your ad space. Some people charge a couple hundred per ad space per MONTH. Keep in mind that these sites have a tremendous amount of traffic.

Just How Much Can You Make?

Well, there’s a problem with this question. If you end up using Google Adsense (it’s real easy so many do), don’t ever state how much you make. It’s against the Terms of Service. And it makes sense, right? You can be vague about it. For this blog, I can enjoy a Starbucks from time to time. Dr. Joseph Kim has 4 blogs total where he writes about nonclinical jobs, medical technology, mobile health, and medical smartphones. All in all, he makes SIX figures a year from them!

If you have a knack for writing and a topic you’re passionate about, you should look into blogging as a way to increase your income. It may not earn you a lot of money, or it might earn you enough to quit your day job!

Weedmaps is like Yelp for Pot. You go there to find reviews on local maijurana dispensaries, medical doctors dishing prescriptions, and marijuana delivery services. So what on earth does this post have to do with physician salaries?

Other than the fact that you can make money evaluating patients and dispensing marijuana prescriptions (that’s a different post that I’ll share very soon), the company WeedMaps actually has a physician on their board.

WeedMaps was bought by General Cannabis last year, November 2010. The deals weren’t disclosed but at that time, WeedMaps was generating $400,000 dollars a month! These days, they are grossing over $1 million dollars a month.

General Cannabis is a publicly traded company on the OTCQX market. Dr. Bonni Goldstein has been on their board of directors since August 2010. She is also the medical director for CannaCenters and Synergistic Resources. She founded the Braniacs Science Discovery Center. She is quite the accomplished business physician!

Prior to her business ventures, she was a pediatric emergency physician. She received her medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and did a pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Although General Cannabis is publicly traded, the executive salaries were not publicly available. Nevertheless, it’s always great to see a physician succeeding in any venture. Even if it’s about weed.
