If you haven’t heard, the  University of Texas at Austin is building a new medical school.  It will be the first medical school in Austin, a place that is well known for it’s research.  Over the past 2 years, UT Austin has received $1.1 billion dollars in research funding.

The school is in the process of hiring a dean and faculty.  $1.2 million dollars has been budgeted for medical and surgical faculty salaries this year.  (reported by The Daily Texan through the Texas Public Information Act)  At UT Austin, there are 17 deans whose salaries range from $183,333 to $541,500.

To clarify, the University of Texas has six health institutions and nine academic institutions.  The health institutions operate independently.  However, the new medical school will be a part of an academic institution.  Meaning, the salaries will be governed by the academic protocols.  The salaries of health institutions tend to be higher than their academic counterparts.  For example, William Powers Jr, President of the University of Texas at Austin had a base salary of $613,612.  Now, here are the base salaries of the current six presidents of UT System health institutions:

As far as faculty salaries go, it will vary greatly on the person’s credentials and experience.  Dr. Rodney Rohrich is a professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and makes $1.75 million dollars per year.  Granted, he is a renowned Plastic Surgeon!  Here are some more faculty salaries at UT Southwestern :

The school was recently named Dell Medical School in honor of Mr. Michael Dell who donated $50 million dollars to it’s construction. It is still in the planning phase and is looking for a location in Austin to plant it’s roots.  50 students are expected to enroll as the inaugural class in 2016.

Residents are doctors too.  But during their on-the-job training program we lovingly call Residency, their salaries are minimal compared to it’s future potential.

Take a look at the results for last year’s AAMC’s Survey of Resident/Fellow stipends:

Mean Resident Stipends from the Past

• 1980 ( when i was born ) – $16,188
• 1968 ( the first residency? ) – $6,200

When you’re researching residencies, you oftentimes concentrate on the academics.  But don’t forget about the salaries, cost of living, and benefits.  Remember, after medical school, it’s time to pay back loans.  Some can defer your loans but others can’t and that can be an extra burden when you’re trying to heal people 80 hours a week.

Last week when I wrote about Quest’s CEO resigning, I did a little digging to see if there are any other physician leaders at Quest.  I came across one that in further research is truly admirable.

Dr. John C. Baldwin has tremendous experience as a physician executive serving on many boards and committees, yet still has time to practice surgery.  He has been an independent director for Quest since 2004 serving on their board of directors and as a member of the audit committee. From that position alone, he earns over $271,000 dollars.  But like I said, he works in a few other roles.

Dr. Baldwin first received a bachelors from Harvard University and then a medical degree from Stanford. He went on to do a residency in Surgery with fellowships in Thoracic Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Cardiac Transplantation.  He was even Chief for many of these fellowships too.  Wow.

Afterwards, he was appointed as faculty for Stanford, followed by Yale, and rising through the ranks to Department Head at Baylor College of Medicine.  He then became Dean of Dartmouth Medical School from 1998 to 2005.  Remember he started working with Quest in 2004.

From 2005 to 2007, he was President and CEO of the Immune Disease Institute which is an affiliate of Harvard University.  Then from 2007 to 2009, he was President of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Baldwin has authored over 400 peer reviewed publications and lectured at over 370 venues.

So now, here’s his current workfolio :

• Board of Directors for Quest – $271,146
• Professor with tenure for Texas Tech – $320,000
• Advisor to the Chancellor for Health Affairs at Texas Tech
• President and Chairman of Slater-Baldwin Farms

I was unable to find the salary for being an Advisor and Slater-Baldwin Farms is privately-held so there  is no salary information publicly available.  But you get the idea, just from two jobs he grosses $591,146.

He is an example of a successful physician who combines practicing medicine (surgery professor) with non-clinical jobs (medical director and president).

Two days ago, Michael Jackson’s doctor was convicted guilty of manslaughter.  At most, he’ll serve four years in prison.  At the least, he might get house arrest for a year.  But at any rate, he’ll get rich anyway.

Shortly after Conrad Murray was charged with manslaughter in 2009, October Films followed Dr. Murray for two years documenting his moves, thoughts, personal stories of Michael Jackson, and events at the trial.  The story was sold to Zodiak Rights for distributing rights.

It’s unclear just how much he made when he sold his story to Zodiak Rights.  One source stated that Zodiak was aiming for 1 million.  Another says no network pays more than $250k for distribution.  Another said it would vary depending on the verdict.

In addition to selling the story, Dr. Murray may receive royalties for each distribution to a tv network.  NBC purchased the rights and will be showing the movie this friday.  Supposedly, Zodiak has claimed to have sold the movie to 10 other stations.  Zodiak is also the exclusive holder of the only interview Dr. Murray has conducted.  That’s being sold around the block too.

Finally, when do you think we’ll be seeing a book from Dr. Murray?  There’s already an Un-Authorized Biography about the celebrity doctor selling on Amazon.  It’s only a matter of time before he uses that outlet as well.  In the CraigsList Killer saga, a book was pushed out 5 months after Philip Markoff was arrested for murder.  Most of the time, it’s hard to get a literary agent to pick up your book, but I’m sure Conrad Murray will have no problems.

With this documentary and a potential book or two, Conrad Murray could stand to profit.  Although, some believe it may only be enough to pay his lawyers as well as his already enormous debts from past lawsuits, student loans, and child support.

Just as well, because most likely, this doctor’s clinical career is ruined.  I doubt he’ll ever be able to recover back into clinical medicine.  His license is currently suspended.  And the Jackson’s have filed a civil suit against Dr. Murray for wrongful death.  If he gets convicted there, it may be ample evidence for the medical board to revoke his license.  Even if it doesn’t get revoked, it will be very hard to rebuild patient trust again.  Thoughts of “Aren’t you the doctor that killed Michael Jackson?” come to mind.

The celebrity doctor’s documentary entitled “Michael Jackson and The Doctor: A Fatal Friendship” is set to air friday night on MSNBC.  Are you going to watch it?

This week’s set of links is a mixture of positive articles with a couple debbie downers.  The good news is that more students are interested in medicine with record high applications.  Now, we just need more medical school spots.  Also, take a look at the article about Radiology Physicians’ Compensation.  It’s very enlightening.  On the downside, it looks like hospitals are decreasing annual raises next year which lags behind group practices.  And pharmaceutical companies continue to take a hit in increasing unemployment statistics.  Although, I think the jobs being cut are likely the lower tier staff and not executives or positions requiring higher education degrees.

Surprisingly, military doctors have a very low salary compared to civilian doctors.  In this infographic, they state that the average salary for a military doctor is $58,000 per year whereas the average civilian doctor is $156,164.

Obviously, specialists in the military can make more but it still seems low, doesn’t it?  The civilian doctor salary they’re quoting is probably a family medicine or internal medicine specialist.

The infographic also gives a little bit more insight into the differences between the two jobs such as bonuses and medical school debt.  Check it out.
